Dubai

Posted 6 days, 20 hours ago on March 28, 2006 by yerma  Just Stuff

I am currently in Dubai, UAE and really enjoying the place. That said, we haven't left the hotel since we arrived on Saturday, we've been working constantly and then heading to dinner in the hotel straight after work. The restaurants here are just incredible, last night was a strangely themed restaurant which had Hawaian music but served sushi, chinese food and the most incredible range of seafood I have ever seen. Tonight we're off for a moonlit picnic in the desert which will be incredible and will try and put a pic up tomorrow.

Found this very interesting picture of the differences between the arabic culture and that off the west.

UPDATE(Thursday 30th March 2006): Have posted this on the home page as he makes an interesting point.

We were offered close to a Billion dollar contract to do work in Dubai but refused because we can't in good conscious support or contribute to a culture that doesn't respect the rights of other human beings. Nice picture, thanks for reminding me that third world country means primitve culture even amid the world's richest city. Read The Seven Pillars of Wisdom by TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). It's a firsthand account of the creation of the middle east.

Thanks for you comments - I think that everyone can be guilty of not respecting human rights.

Do you do business with the USA? How about the people in guantanamo bay, the wire tapping of citizens etc?
Do you do business with the UK? Holding people without charge in a secret prison with minimal access to lawyers etc - supporting the kidnap of people from foreign countries and taking them to be questioned by the CIA
Do you do business with Russia? Essentially a corrupt police state

What I am trying to say is that there are a lot of dreadful things that happen in the world and it is only through speaking to and showing the benefits of a different way of doing things; force/sanctions etc do not work. I agree that it's not perfect but hopefully through education and dialogue we can start to clean this up.
