Had an interesting comment on my post about Dubai which should probably make it to the front page.

We were offered close to a Billion dollar contract to do work in Dubai but refused because we can't in good conscious support or contribute to a culture that doesn't respect the rights of other human beings. Nice picture, thanks for reminding me that third world country means primitve culture even amid the world's richest city. Read The Seven Pillars of Wisdom by TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). It's a firsthand account of the creation of the middle east.

and my reply:

Thanks for you comments - I think that everyone can be guilty of not respecting human rights.

Do you do business with the USA? How about the people in guantanamo bay, the wire tapping of citizens etc?
Do you do business with the UK? Holding people without charge in a secret prison with minimal access to lawyers etc - supporting the kidnap of people from foreign countries and taking them to be questioned by the CIA
Do you do business with Russia? Essentially a corrupt police state

What I am trying to say is that there are a lot of dreadful things that happen in the world and it is only through speaking to and showing the benefits of a different way of doing things; force/sanctions etc do not work. I agree that it's not perfect but hopefully through education and dialogue we can start to clean this up.

I will try to read the book he mentions in the post as it sounds fascinating.
