Dyslexia made me big in tiny art

Posted 2 years, 11 months ago on April 14, 2006 by yerma  Links

I was sent a link to the BBC ouch! pages which is a site written by and for people with disabilities. The language used was initially quite surprising - the words "spaz" and "cripple" make an appearence quite a few times but as the FAQ explains:

We occasionally get emails from people who are confused and/or disgusted that we happily use words like spaz and cripple on Ouch. They assume that these words are always offensive.

This is not the case. "It ain't what you say, it's the way that you say it" - right? We never use these words as terms of abuse as heard in your local playground, never ever ever. When we use them, we do so in a way that is empowering. Lots of disabled people use these kinds of words to describe their disabled mates: it's a friendly community thing and humorously takes the bite away from the words that some of us are - or were - taunted with. Ouch tries to talk about disability in the same way that disabled people would talk about it between themselves down the pub.

I am really looking forward to listening to the podcast which contains Matt Fraser and Liz Carr discussing some issues and generally having a laugh. Their highly un-pc quiz Vegetable, Vegetable or Vegetable ..."in which Mat and Liz have to guess what's wrong wiv the disabled caller on the end of the phone..." sounds like something David Brent would come up with :).

Anyway, the link I wanted to post for myself is here - a great talent who creates the most incredible, tiny pieces of art.
