Contact from Sun

Posted 2 years, 11 months ago on April 25, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

Have had a technical rep from Sun on the phone today and explained the predicament I have found myself in. On initial testing, the Sun box is about 1/2 as quick as a dual p3 1GHz box running Windows. He explained that there are 6 cores in the Sun box each one of which is not as powerful as the Pentium chips but when utilised together are many, many times more powerful. My next job therefore is to work out how to do a clustered install of cfmx7 on solaris so that all cpu's can be utilised to their fullest potential, am having trouble enough with a single install atm but will post here when I have results....

Installing cfmx7 on solaris

Posted 2 years, 11 months ago on April 5, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

After getting apache etc working I thought coldfusion would be a piece of cake to get sorted but it turns out that isn't the case. I downloaded the install files - chmod'd them 755 and appeared to get it installed but was presented with an error like this:

[Mon Apr 3 17:21:36 2006] [notice] jrApache[5032:64802] Couldn't initialize from remote server, JRun server(s) probably down.
[Mon Apr 3 17:21:36 2006] [notice] jrApache[5032:64802] JRun will not accept request. Check JRun web server configuration and JRun mappings on JRun server.
[Mon Apr 3 17:22:38 2006] [notice] SIGHUP received. Attempting to restart
[Mon Apr 3 17:22:38 2006] [warn] Loaded DSO /opt/coldfusionmx7/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/mod_jrun.so uses plain Apache 1.3 API, this module might crash under EAPI! (please recompile it with -DEAPI)
[Mon Apr 3 17:22:38 2006] [alert] httpd: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 10.0.13.9 for ServerName
[Mon Apr 3 17:22:38 2006] [notice] jrApache[init] JRun 4.0 (Build 92909) Apache module - Feb 18 2005 07:11:57
[Mon Apr 3 17:22:39 2006] [notice] Apache/1.3.33 (Unix) JRun/4.0 mod_ssl/2.8.22 OpenSSL/0.9.7d configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Apr 3 17:22:39 2006] [notice] Accept mutex: fcntl (Default: fcntl)
# cat /opt/coldfusionmx7/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/jrunserver.store
cat: cannot open /opt/coldfusionmx7/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/jrunserver.store

It seemed that the machine was unable to make a connection to the jrun server which should have been installed along with the coldfusion server. I played around for a while and then decided to run the installer again to see if it would help. This time I was give the option to install jrun on the box which I duly did and was rewarded with the screen I was hoping to see on the cfadministrator!!! Now time to put the app on it and see how much quicker it goes on Solaris.

Getting solaris online

Posted 1 day, 18 hours ago on April 3, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

So now have wget working I think but was unable to get online, this url was very useful for helping out. i especially like the command at the end sync;sync;sync followed by a reboot :)
Will update this post later if I get anything working.
UPDATE: 15:55 - well this is a turn up for the books, something which worked 1st time :) I now have a working install of apache along with a package manager which is making my life much, much easier. Transferring over coldfusion 7 now and then we'll see how this beast actually works.......

Installing software on solaris

Posted 4 days, 22 hours ago on March 31, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

They don't exactly make it easy for you!!! No wonder Unix admins are so highly paid. After working out about the pkgadd etc I d'loaded gcc and got it installed successfully but then found out my PATH was all screwed up :( It took me ages to work out how to change them all but soon found the /etc/default/su file and the supath variable inside that(for some reason the . This page helped with gcc install - don't forget to follow the instructions about the mkheaders.conf though.
Now trying pkg-get cause this is doing my head in!!! haven't even got apache working yet!!!!!

More work on the sun box

Posted 5 days, 11 hours ago on March 30, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

So have been trying to get some stuff installed on the new Sun box and it really does come without any of the tools that most Linux distros have(I know it's not a Linux distro but some help would be good!!!)
Items I am having to install manually:

  • apache 2
  • wget - having trouble even getting the files over!!
  • perl (maybe come in handy)

The only problem is when you try to run ./configure you get this message:
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
which is slightly annoying. Off to bed now, so far the computing power etc is very, very impressive but it would be quicker/easier to get a debian disk and install it over the top......
Update - just discovered about pkgadd etc, things are looking up :) downloaded gcc atm and then others all to follow.

SSH access sorted and user added

Posted 1 week, 4 days ago on March 24, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

Managed to get ssh access sorted for the new box - root access is not allowed (makes sense I suppose so had to create a new user, that wasn't as easy as it should be as kept getting this message:

ERROR: Unable to create the home directory: Operation not applicable.

So after some googling I found this link which told me how to disable nfs automounting and then used this link to add the user. Ssh access is now enabled on the correct ip :)

Getting into the console on Solaris

Posted 1 week, 4 days ago on March 24, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

Not able to make the ssh work yet but worked out how to get telnet access again:

telnet to the admin port and fill in your details, do console -f to get control of the console and then login as normal.

Starting up the new box

Posted 1 week, 4 days ago on March 24, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

So the box is booting now :) a bit of a complex start for someone that has never used a sun box before but following the instructions to the letter has helped - as for the cable yesterday I was actually wrong - it is not a serial to serial cable required but a serial to RJ-45 which I could have done yesterday. So far, it has all worked to the letter and at the moment i am configuring Solaris(2 questions asked of me so far, Language and Terminal type).
Network configuration has just come up and seems very easy to follow so far - simpler maybe than debian???
I could definately get used to remote management through a network port instead of relying on being next to a machine!!
So, all is now configured and has come up again - am getting some strange compilation stuff happening now in the teminal window which seems to have led to ssh starting.
Getting a bit confused now and have to catch a plane but will try again later :).

New server arrives!!!

Posted 1 week, 5 days ago on March 23, 2006 by yerma  Sun Server testing

So I was reading an entry on a blog a short while ago and decided to take him at his word and applied for the server for work. As a web development house we use Coldfusion for our applications and are always interested to try out new platforms for implementation.
The server duly arrived a few minutes ago and I spent some time marvelling at the amount of packaging that a server obviously requires - 2x big cardboard boxes for power cords(one in each!!!) and then the actual box itself. The look of the server is beautiful, from the tiny HDD's to the hotswap PSU's. Unlike with a Dell box it is not possible to boot straight into the machine and the pre-startup manual is over 70 pages long but hopefully when it's booted it will be a simple process to keep it there. Unfortunately, I don't have the serial cable required to boot the server today so will be unable to start the box up until it arrives by post tomorrow morning.
The software to go on here will be:

  • apache 2
  • Coldfusion MX7.1
  • a high usage, processer intensive web application

Further info will be posted in due course along with benchmarks showing the speed comparisons with a similar windows machine(and Linux box if time permits).
