Contact from SunPosted 2 years, 11 months ago on April 25, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing Have had a technical rep from Sun on the phone today and explained the predicament I have found myself in. On initial testing, the Sun box is about 1/2 as quick as a dual p3 1GHz box running Windows. He explained that there are 6 cores in the Sun box each one of which is not as powerful as the Pentium chips but when utilised together are many, many times more powerful. My next job therefore is to work out how to do a clustered install of cfmx7 on solaris so that all cpu's can be utilised to their fullest potential, am having trouble enough with a single install atm but will post here when I have results.... ---Comment Installing cfmx7 on solarisPosted 2 years, 11 months ago on April 5, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing After getting apache etc working I thought coldfusion would be a piece of cake to get sorted but it turns out that isn't the case. I downloaded the install files - chmod'd them 755 and appeared to get it installed but was presented with an error like this: ---Comment Getting solaris onlinePosted 1 day, 18 hours ago on April 3, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing So now have wget working I think but was unable to get online, this url was very useful for helping out. i especially like the command at the end sync;sync;sync followed by a reboot :) ---2 comments Installing software on solarisPosted 4 days, 22 hours ago on March 31, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing They don't exactly make it easy for you!!! No wonder Unix admins are so highly paid. After working out about the pkgadd etc I d'loaded gcc and got it installed successfully but then found out my PATH was all screwed up :( It took me ages to work out how to change them all but soon found the /etc/default/su file and the supath variable inside that(for some reason the . This page helped with gcc install - don't forget to follow the instructions about the mkheaders.conf though. ---One comment More work on the sun boxPosted 5 days, 11 hours ago on March 30, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing So have been trying to get some stuff installed on the new Sun box and it really does come without any of the tools that most Linux distros have(I know it's not a Linux distro but some help would be good!!!)
The only problem is when you try to run ./configure you get this message: configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH which is slightly annoying. Off to bed now, so far the computing power etc is very, very impressive but it would be quicker/easier to get a debian disk and install it over the top...... Update - just discovered about pkgadd etc, things are looking up :) downloaded gcc atm and then others all to follow. ---Comment SSH access sorted and user addedPosted 1 week, 4 days ago on March 24, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing Managed to get ssh access sorted for the new box - root access is not allowed (makes sense I suppose so had to create a new user, that wasn't as easy as it should be as kept getting this message: ---Comment Getting into the console on SolarisPosted 1 week, 4 days ago on March 24, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing Not able to make the ssh work yet but worked out how to get telnet access again: ---Comment Starting up the new boxPosted 1 week, 4 days ago on March 24, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing So the box is booting now :) a bit of a complex start for someone that has never used a sun box before but following the instructions to the letter has helped - as for the cable yesterday I was actually wrong - it is not a serial to serial cable required but a serial to RJ-45 which I could have done yesterday. So far, it has all worked to the letter and at the moment i am configuring Solaris(2 questions asked of me so far, Language and Terminal type). ---Comment New server arrives!!!Posted 1 week, 5 days ago on March 23, 2006 by yerma Sun Server testing So I was reading an entry on a blog a short while ago and decided to take him at his word and applied for the server for work. As a web development house we use Coldfusion for our applications and are always interested to try out new platforms for implementation.
Further info will be posted in due course along with benchmarks showing the speed comparisons with a similar windows machine(and Linux box if time permits). ---Comment
